It is said that the kitchen is the heart of the home. It can be one of the peaceful places in my home (no one is allowed in when I’m cooking). If you live in a rental like me, you don’t always get what you want. The cabinetry might be old, or you may have some funky looking laminate counter tops. What may feel peaceful, may not always look peaceful. I’ve seen video after video of renters adding peel and stick tile, or wall paper, to cover up the unsightly “landlord special” pain jobs. While I love a good DIY, I don’t have it in me to do all that work, only to have to remove it in a few years time. If that’s you, I love it for you. I aspire to be like you.
As for me, though, I’m sticking with decor to bring some character to my kitchen. Enter the brass book stand. I found this one at, you guessed it, Goodwill. I’d been looking for one for a few weeks, so when I saw it, my heart skipped a beat. I didn’t have to mull it around or ask Google what I should do with it. Immediately, yes. Into the cart.

I’m currently using it as a recipe book stand. This book on display was found at The Crooked Tail thrift store in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. The book includes recipes from the different regions of Spain. I love it for the vibrant, multicolored photographs. It’s actually inspired me to try some new recipes. This is such a simple and practical way to add some color to your kitchen. If you want to switch up the look or color profile, just turn the page!

I placed this book stand strategically on my kitchen counter to fill some dead space on the wall. With the addition of the book stand, I made a few more “upgrades” to the kitchen, like adding a marble trivet, spoon rest, and brass paper towel holder. With these low-cost switches, the kitchen has an elevated feel and helps me enjoy the work I do even more.
Maybe the recipe book isn’t your vibe. Maybe your kitchen is even smaller than mine (I find THAT hard to believe). You could also substitute the recipe book for a cool plate to display, a framed photograph or handwritten note. Maybe you move the book stand to your child’s bedroom or playroom and display different books throughout the year. Do you have a hutch, open shelving, a book case? What is something worth displaying? How would you style your book stand? Let me know in the comments!
