The Pedestal Bowl

Me to Google: What can you put in a pedestal bowl other than decorative balls?

Living in a small space, it’s important to me that whatever is visible in my home, serves a purpose. I didn’t want another vessel that I had to fill with glass globes or faux fruit. I had found the perfect pedestal bowl at my local Goodwill, but I couldn’t walk out with it, if it didn’t serve a purpose. Which led to my question to all-knowing Google.

One hit suggested using it to store “homeless” items. That’s what I’m calling them anyway. Things like my tv remote, video game controllers, sand timers (hey, remember I said I’m a mom of two?). Things that are used pretty consistently, but have never had a place of their own.

Living on my coffee table for several years, had been a large metal tray. I loved it, but it was hard to keep clean. Crumbs and Legos kept finding their way underneath of it. She needed a break. Cue the pedestal bowl.

This is exact one is the Hearth and Hand brand from Target, but I found it in Goodwill. That’s the thing about over-consumerism.. you can often find whatever you’re looking for in a thrift store already, for a fraction of the price.

I placed it on top of a marble base (HELLO, SHE’S A SHOWSTOPPER) to provide a sort of anchor, and added a few decorative pieces to add some personality. I love this little bust I found at Goodwill, such a steal. I think the pear candle gives it a little pop of color. “But why don’t you light it?” you (and my sons) ask. Because, look! She’s so cute 🥹. Anyway, as a general rule, I like to set up displays in groups of 2s or 3s, but do what makes you happy! It’s your home!

If you’re ready to add a pedestal bowl to your home, I’ve linked some inspiration below. Maybe yours becomes a place for keys, game pieces, or your own ‘homeless’ things. Tell me what you think in the comments!
